Amalfi Coast

In an extraordinary landscape where sea and mountain, deep valleys and citrus groves plateaux alternate, everybody can choose his ideal holiday. Between the 8th and the 13th century Amalfi was the main-city of the maritime See-Repbulik of Amalfi, including the Island of Capri, Sorrento and island of Sirenuse, the coast line from Positano to Cetara (situated on the end of the coast - direction Salerno), up in the mountains Scala, Ravello, Tramonti, Agerola and behind the Milky Mountains (Monti Lattari) the villages Lettere, Piemonte and Gragnano.
Ravello is relatively out of the way and the bulk of its visitors come during the day, leaving the nights gloriously quiet. Stay here if: You want to ease into your Amalfi Coast experience; you want to stay somewhere where most everyone speaks English; you want a strategic location for easy travel and day trips within the region; you don't have a lot of time on the coast; you want a mix between new world conveniences and traditional atmospheres; you want to day-trip from Naples or to Pompeii; you don't mind the crowds.

If you can get to Amalfi or to Sorrento easily from your villa, or a number of other more minor centres like Ravello or Sant'Agata, you will not need a car for your walking; use the bus services that radiate from those places to connect to the start or end of your walk.
It's easy to bypass Nerano on the way from Sorrento to Positano, but stop for an al fresco lunch or dinner at Lo Scoglio and you won't regret it. Poised above Marina del Cantone, where boats bob in the harbor and resident kids swim, this family-run trattoria exemplifies the easygoing yet glamorous ethos of the coast.
From both Sorrento and Salerno, you must catch a bus for any onward travel to the towns on the Amalfi Coast, and the local bus company, SITA, caters to the region and allows for easy and budget-friendly travel between the different towns on the Amalfi Coast.
The Amalfi of today is very much geared up towards tourism and during the sunny, summer season, the town's meagre population quickly swells as tourists arrive to sightsee around the historic archways, weaving back streets and central piazza, enjoy day trips to the island of Capri, or to simply relax on the sun-drenched beaches.
