Drawing is a visual art, and it can be created using different media. Besides, a growing number of investigations, demonstrate that drawings form the material basis of mural, panel, and book paintings, statues, etchings, engravings, mosaics, stained glass, and many other forms of decorative art Such preparatory sketches may be limited to broad guidelines or they may regulate the whole work down to the smallest details.
Pastel drawings were known to the Accademia degli Incamminati no later than the 17th century, although as an art form it did not reach its apogee until the 18th century, notably in France (with Jean Marc Nattier, Maurice Quentin de La Tour, Jean-Baptiste Perronneau and Jean Chardin) and in Venice (with Rosalba Carriera).



The drawing, included in a 2017 promised gift of more than 300 16th- to 18th-century Dutch, Flemish, and Netherlandish drawings from the Maida and George Abrams collection, and then outright gifted in 2018, will be part of the intimate installation Rembrandt and the Performance of Drawing, ” featuring two of Rembrandt's drawings, and two prints in a display timed to the 350th anniversary of the artist's death.

There are several categories of drawing, including figure drawing , cartooning , doodling , and freehand There are also many drawing methods, such as line drawing, stippling, shading , the surrealist method of entopic graphomania (in which dots are made at the sites of impurities in a blank sheet of paper, and lines are then made between the dots), and tracing (drawing on a translucent paper, such as tracing paper , around the outline of preexisting shapes that show through the paper).
Others artists whose drawings fall outside landscape and portraiture include: the 18th-century Italian engraver Giambattista Piranesi, the Anglo-Swiss artist Henry Fuseli (1841-1925), the 19th-century English illustrator Walter Crane (1845-1915), the influential French Symbolist artist Gustave Moreau (1826-98) and the 20th-century Surrealists.

It is about exploring the relationship between fine art and drawing in more depth. Conceptual art, performance art, installation, video, film and digital art: they all made drawing (supposedly) redundant. I used to write longhand on the right hand side of an A4-sized ring-bound notebook, and on the left hand side I'd draw grotesque faces with huge noses and crinkly hair and wrinkles, or sometimes beautiful, young, naked women.
