I would not recommend Auburn a suburb for anyone to live in. Harvey Norman's operating structure is unusual in that each store department (flooring, bedding, furniture, computer and electrical) is operated by a separate entity of management. When purchasing your furniture, you should find a store that not only sells beautiful pieces, but also builds them with the highest standard of quality, has many design options and sells at affordable prices.
I found myself living in Auburn for a year due entirely to the cheapness of the studio apartment I leased, having never set foot in the suburb before the inspection. Its convenience for shopping and train, has good access to services, but everything is let down by the ppl around you.
30 minutes or so will get you to the city, though few train services stop at Auburn Station, and it took 40 minutes to get to UWS Parramatta from my apartment on Station Rd. If you're not within a comfortable distance of the small shopping centre, expect to pay a hefty, convenience store-like markup for groceries at some of the corner stores littered around the suburb.
